30 CHAPTER 2: SMOKING AS A MAJOR RISK FACTOR FOR ADULT PERIODONTITIS 2.1 SMOKING—A MAJOR RISK FACTOR FOR PERIODONTAL DISEASES Tobacco use is a potent risk factor for many human diseases and conditions including cancer, cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases and it has a major deleterious effect on population health. Also, tobacco smoking appears to be one of the single most significant environmental factors in the initiation and progression of destructive periodontal disease (Solomon, Priore & Bross, 1968; Haber, 1994; Bergström & Preber, 1994; Grossi et al., 1994; 1995; Kamoi, 1996; Krall et al., 1997; AAP Position Paper, 1996b; 1999). Smoking can affect pathogenesis of the disease in an individual, change periodontal disease patterns in the population and affect periodontal therapy outcomes. A number of studies, mostly from industrialised countries, have confirmed the detrimental effects of tobacco use on periodontal health and disease. The mechanism by which tobacco exerts its influence on oral health has not been fully understood or explained by experiments. Moreover, the temporal sequence of the process is always extremely difficult to explore. However, evidence obtained from cross-sectional risk assessment studies and several longitudinal studies have suggested the causal role of tobacco smoking is the initiation and progression of periodontitis in humans.

Correlation between smoking and severity of periodontal disease in patients with periodontitis in Kerman
Introduction: Periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease of dental supporting tissues caused by bacteria, leading to inflammation, irreversible gum attachment loss, and alveolar bone destruction and eventually tooth loss. While infection is a necessary prerequisite for developing periodontitis, its course and severity depend on a number or factors including inheritance, health behaviors and...
متن کاملSmoking influences salivary histamine levels in periodontal disease.
OBJECTIVES Histamine, a potent vasoactive amine, is increased in saliva of periodontitis patients. The present study aimed to further investigate the diagnostic potential of histamine for periodontal disease and assessed smoking, a major risk factor of periodontitis, as a possible influencing factor. METHODS Salivary and serum samples of 106 participants (60 periodontitis patients, 46 control...
متن کاملThe Effects of Cigarette Smoke Condensate and Nicotine on Periodontal Tissue in a Periodontitis Model Mouse
Cigarette smoking is a major lifestyle-related risk factor for periodontal diseases. However, the pathophysiological role of cigarette smoking in periodontal disease has yet to be fully elucidated. Here we report that the systemic administration of cigarette smoke condensate or nicotine, which is the major ingredient of cigarette smoke, augmented alveolar bone loss. Concomitantly, the number of...

Introduction: Although bacterial plaque is regarded as the major cause of periodontitis, the role of smoking as an important risk factor has been established in the progression of periodontal disease. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate knowledge and attitude of patients with periodontitis concerning effects of smoking on periodontal health. Method: In this descriptive cross-sectional ...
متن کاملمروری بر تأثیر اضطراب و افسردگی بر بیماریهای پریودنتال: مقاله مروری
Background and Aims: Periodontitis does not affect on all patients by the same way. There are some risk factors in some people that make them more sensitive to progress of periodontitis. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, and special pathogens increase the risk of periodontitis. Other factors such as stress, depression and anxiety, are not crucial risk factors for periodontitis yet. Biologic expla...
